Sales Rising Slowly but Surely

From our friends at Floor Covering Weekly:

This year didn’t quite meet industry expectations on a number of fronts. First, after getting off to an encouraging start, sales began to fizzle come September — later though than when sales stalled in 2011. Industry executives reported that while sales remain in the low single digits, mainly between 3 and 5 percent, they are confident that the trend is heading back up.

New Project - Free Axez for TEAL at Yale University

Check out our new project:

Free Axez for the Technology Enhanced Active Learning Center classroom (TEAL)

The use of Free Axez allows for the accommodation of cables, wires and sensitive equipment used to facilitate and organize this up and

coming higher education concept.

Rather than have a professor teach to a lecture hall of 130 students they break up into tables of nine and every table has a computer monitor on it. The professor can see the students on his computer, similar to skype, and the students can see the professor on their monitor. They engage and exchange spreadsheets, pictures, and documents with each other or with the group. It is a way to use technology to make the classroom experience more interpersonal.

We are currently working on another similar concept at Columbia called SCALE UP – Student Centered Active Learning Environment for Undergraduate Programs.

Charity Here at Home

Our very own Mike Pendergast from our Rochester NY offices is doing something about the situation many people are facing on the East Coast in the wake of Sandy. Mike sent out an email asking all the people on his mailing list to help gather food, clothing and other essentials to those in need. He has that he himself would take care of making sure that they got to those in need. As a result of this, a member of Starnet from Baton Rouge Louisiana has arranged something incredibly touching. With the help of several others, he will be driving an 18ft trailer loaded with relief supplies to the affected areas. From the bottom of our hearts we thank all our heroes for this incredible selfless act.

See Our Recent New Project!

Financo in NYC:

We were doing the carpet maintenance for this financial investment firm in New York City. After relocating temporarily, they reached out to us to help them with their flooring needs.

We chose the sustainable option of keeping the existing carpet and did a major cleaning of it. We replaced the conference room with Tandus carpet tile and replaced the reception area using Stile wood. The restrooms were cleaned using Siltanium, so all in all, a great all-around use of our products and services.

A Message from Randy

As the summer and eventually the year come to a close, we remain optimistic that the economic recovery continues and that Americans WILL find work and businesses thrive.

Here at RD Weis Companies, based on the last two years' growth, we feel a strong sense of hope for 2013.

We continue with such products as our solution to bathroom tile and grout which restores the tile floor, placing a "glass" coating over the floor that unlike others in this category does not wear off and show traffic patterns.  Another segment that continues to grow involves products geared towards health care, namely rubber flooring and new products arising from a new partnership between Starnet and Mannington.

And as always, Sustainability remains our mantra. We continue to stay on the path toward a better environmental impact for our company and for our customers.

Stay cool through the remaining part of the summer - all of us at RD Weis Companies wish you and your business long-term and truly sustainable success!

Randy

Top 10 Risk Factors for Slip-and-Fall Accidents

Being aware of risk factors that can cause a slip-and-fall accident is a major concern in all types of facilities. According to forensic reviews of dozens of slip-and-fall injury accidents, these are the 10 most commonly associated risk factors for slips and falls:

1. Surface composition: Refers to the type of floor surface and its slip resistance when dry and properly cleaned (Some hard-surface floors may be slip-resistant when dry, but slippery when wet or soiled.)

2. Foreign substances: Such as ice, grease, or water

3. Surface conditions: Raised or recessed edges, loose carpeting, soiling and overall cleanliness of the floor

4. Surface changes: For instance, walking from a carpeted floor to a tile floor

5. Level changes: Surface level changes; unexpected slopes or raises of three steps or less

6. Obstructions: For example, extension cords, hoses and other foreign items

7. Visibility: Poor lighting, but also glare, shadows, bright lights or color contrasts, which can impede visibility

8. Human factors: Different individual physical capabilities and physical challenges, shoe types and familiarity with a walk area

9. Stairs: Falls from stairs, which are defined as more than three steps. These typically result in the most serious injuries.

10. Unusual features: Out-of-the-ordinary conditions that might distract a walker, such as loud noises, strobe or flashing lights, etc.

"Of particular concern is ‘surface conditions' of the floor," says Matt Morrison, communications manager for Kaivac. "Conventional floor mopping methods can spread soils over floors and create a slippery situation, changing the floor's surface condition. Selecting alternative floor cleaning systems can enhance cleaning results and lower risks."

Interesting Article on Janitorial Services

The efficacy of janitorial services via Today's Facility Manager magazine:
If you were asked to make a list of people who promise more than they deliver, the list might include car salesmen, political candidates, creepy dates from Match.com, and cleaning companies. For facility managers (fms), it should come as no surprise that the International Facility Management Association (IFMA) recently ranked poor janitorial service as the third highest office complaint.

Another New Project - New City Library, New City, NY

The Library requested that the re-carpeting of their open, multi-level spaces make a big "floor statement” and create a “fun” place to visit. We were asked to update the library by only changing the existing flooring which was past its expiration date and was about to become a safety issue if it was not replaced. The designer, Judy Girod, of Lothrop Associates, incorporated organic pathways using accent colors to help define certain parts of the library. Accomplishing this using only carpet required special use of the magic wand of design ideas. Using the Tandus Modular Landscape Textures carpet colors in three colors with color spots of Plexus in 5 shades was the solution for the main Library.

New Project Completed - Lothrop Associates

New Project in White Plains, NY. The design strategy and challenge was in selecting floor finishes for this architectural office that would serve as a "design lab" using materials that served the office function but also provided a variety of flooring types that would be compatible in the open office environment yet set apart the key areas of the office and use different, imaginative, but complimentary products within the construction budget. This concept came together by using hard surfaces abutting soft surfaces without transition strips and all had to be perfectly installed. The Carpets were all by Tandus, the vinyl tiles were all by Armstrong, and the rubber floor was by Mondo. Take a look!

A Message from Randy

Happy 2012!

As we move into the New Year and an election year, our hope is that the economy continues to recover and grow and that all Americans find meaningful work. At the core of our recovery as a nation is our ability to remain positive about the future and feel that better times are ahead. The recession has been daunting for many families and our hope is that the future is more hopeful.

At RD Weis, we saw growth in 2011 and see 2012 at least as positive as last year, and are encouraged with the many new products and services we have launched. One such product is a new solution to bathroom tile and grout which restores the tile floor, placing a “glass” coating over the floor that unlike others in this category does not wear off and show traffic patterns. Another segment that continues to grow are products geared towards health care and senior living that have great aesthetics and are easy to install and maintain. Lastly, with all of us carrying phone charges, pda’s, IPads, and personal computers around, each day is a quest to find outlets and power to plug into to keep all of these devices functional. One such solution is a unique low profile wire management solution that can be installed in new or existing space to bring unlimited power to the work area.

RD Weis is now 21 years old and this year we will be honoring three clients who have been with us for over 20 years, a feat that we are very proud of and thank our partners Bayerische Landesbank, Sirius America Insurance Company, and Mitsubishi for their continued and ongoing support. One of our greatest achievements in business is the retention of our employees and customers … they are equally valued.

Buy American and sustainability remain central to us and many of our clients. We continue to look for ways to improve our own performance in these areas and make our own contribution to this national cause.

Our best wishes to all of our readers and continued prosperity.

Randy

Attention-Grabbing Messages!

Great advice on creating a message that grabs your audiences attention for the next meeting or conference.

From the Harvard Business Review:

You can feel the tension in the compressed smiles, quick nods and pointed questions at the annual Morgan Stanley Global Healthcare conference. Schedules are packed as the high-stakes finance crowd gathers to hear 20-minute rapid-fire talks by CEOs of start-ups and public companies who seek funding or favorable stock analysts' reports. Presenters speak fast, using complex medical and financial terms.
